Boost Your Steps 10 Minutes per Day

Most people are aware that getting routine exercise is good for your health.  But did you know that adding just 10 minutes of walking to your day has the potential to extend your lifespan?  A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that more than 100,000 deaths per year could be prevented by boosting your steps even just a modest amount.  The long-term gains are substantial!

Walking also contributes to stronger mental health. Leisure walking among older adults can decrease symptoms of depression, reduce stress, and increase energy levels.

Join us at Walk Fit each week to reap the benefits while also making new friends.  Walk Fit is a free mall walking program hosted by Virginia Hospital Center.

Aging in Northern Virginia

A 2023 special report produced by the Community Foundation of Northern Virginia found that Northern Virginia has a number of community supports for older adults compared to 15 of the largest metros in the United States. If you are in need of support services, the best place to start is with your Area Agency on Aging (AAA). This is a federally mandated agency that has in-depth knowledge of resources in the community that can assist with aging safely and independently. The AAA office can provide information about housing, transportation, food, adult day programs, support groups, Medicare and so much more. If you or someone who know is in need of services, visit your local AAA office online or in person to get started.
